Internet Privacy & Security Activity
For this activity, I want students to interact with the web and each other. At the beginning of the lesson, we will use the internet to access a cyber security quiz aimed at teens to assess their skills. Then we will unleash a prepared photo of the teacher into cyberspace on three social media networks of the students' choice. By the end of the lesson, we will check back on this photo to see how many shares it got on each site during this short time. This is to demonstrate how quickly information such as images can be shared and manipulated. The teacher will then lead a short class discussion on what students use the internet for and what issues they may face concerning privacy and security. Students will be presented with a Coggle on cyber security and privacy issues to demonstrate how they are interrelated. In small groups, they will each be assigned a hypothetical situation and are expected to discuss what went wrong and what measure could have been taken to prevent it. Finally, students will work together to develop a cyber security and privacy action plan for their own lives. My hope for this activity is that students will learn about relevant security and privacy issues that they may face in their own lives. Working with an ESL population, specifically, discussion of these issues, the language that surrounds them, and how to address them is essential, as English language learners could possibly be targets for abuse or fraud. This age group in particular is just beginning to explore things such as social media and may have the freedom to make some purchases online, so it is paramount that they understand the potential dangers and consequences of the cyber world. The inclusion of the action plan is not only for students to reference later on, but as a tactic for students to disseminate this information to their families. A document such as this can be of significance to a family of English language learners who may have a difficult time navigating the online world in English. |
